Educating the public about the benefits and limitations of s deposit insurance systems is key to the effectiveness of the system. A successful public awareness program should be designed to build public confidence in the deposit insurance system and the safety and soundness of the financial system.
Components of an effective public awareness program include: building acceptance among stakeholders; enhancing the level of stakeholder awareness by providing more information and extending or broadening the target audience; provide for ongoing engagement and feedback to ensure that the public awareness program is relevant and effective; using the right communications channels to reach the target audience; building the credibility, authority and reputation of the deposit insurer as a well-managed and well-governed organization and reinforcing consumer protection and financial education.
The IADI guidance paper also provides guidance on identifying target audience; appropriate communications tools; and evaluating the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns.
